Stoked and Broke is voted the Best Film of the Year at the 8th International Surf Film Festival of Anglet. The jury, who sometimes struggled to find a consensus on the eclectic selection, had no doubt about the film, which encapsulates all in one the criteria of a great movie: an original and unique scenario, great footage and story telling, and amazing surfing.
Stoked and Broke is the story of an epic surf trip on zero dollars. With handmade boards, bamboo rickshaws and solar cookers, surfers Ryan Burch and Cyrus Sutton set off on a thirty mile, eight day walk through San Diego. But what begins as a guide to taking a minimalist surfing journey, quickly becomes an examination of freedom vs alienation.
As Frank Bywalski, (CEO of Xtreme Video and distributor of the film) commented on behalf of Cyrus Sutton "it's such a great concept it deserves to expand, so kids in France can go and make their own "Stoked and Broke" and document it"

BERNIE BAKER – Presidents of the Jury
As Hawaii’s Contest Director for the famous Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and as a senior photographer and staff writer for SURFER magazine since the mid-1970’s, Bernie has lived on the North Shore for the past 37 years. Following his college years and earliest surfing ‘career’ in Santa Barbara California Bernie joined forces with master surfing photographer Steve Wilkings to cover the island surf scene during the 70’s as the two principal shooters. Mr. Baker was also the “go to” person for anything in the Hawaiian surf culture that made it into print. Film reviews of the latest surf movies playing in Honolulu or Haleiwa were his favorite “side job” as a writer, moving out and away from the “surf magazine only “ column to local island surfing’s inside reporter at Honolulu’s largest daily newspaper, the Honolulu Advertiser. He has spent the last three decades as an international ASP judge and for Hawaii’s largest amateur surfing association besides his winter season’s duties as Triple Crown Contest Director.
“I now have a 10 year old surf “rat” that constantly shows me the difference in tastes between my teenage surf crew from back then and his gang on the North Shore today. Not that much differs in what stokes them and what got us hooting and cheering, it’s still fast action, the BIG moves and editing that keeps you wanting the next scene to come up – that’s what separates surf ‘films’ from other sports movies. The slow paced visuals may be OK with an older crowd looking for some ‘eye candy’ dreaming (everyone wants to get far away on a surf trip, right?), but it’s all the same now as it was then for what gets replayed over and over on the dvd player."
Bernie has lived at Sunset Beach the past four decades, dividing his time with his family duties, providing material for the well respected surfline.com web site and presently working on the documentary on the life of famous Hawaiian lifeguard and surfer Eddie Aikau.
